[Album Review] La Libre | Tassin-Hermia-Joris – Midnight Sun

Tassin - Hermia - Joris
The guitarist Julien Tassin, the saxophonist Manu Hermia, and the drummer/percussionist Chris Joris have become unmissable figures on the Belgian jazz scene in recent years due to their dynamism and creativity. Enjoying their respective careers, they had never before recorded anything together. This is now done thanks to the Igloo label which enabled the birth of Midnight Sun, an original album that explores the meeting of contemporary blues, jazz, and African music. Each composition, designed like a painting, offers a variation of this encounter with delicacy and surprises. Tinged with spirituality, the music of Midnight Sun takes listeners to varied and unpredictable horizons where an seemingly simple melody can suddenly take a complex and unexpected turn, and where the instruments are never confined to a predefined role. However, this complexity in no way harms the emotional potential of the album, which deserves more than a discreet ear.
