WAARLIJK
Waarlijk is not your everyday brass band. It is a unique quintet creating an overlap between groove-based music and free improvisation. It is an experiment in which the audience members are allowed to move between the musicians and the musicians move between the audience members. The listener literally hears the music from new angles, getting immersed in a danceable trip.
The goal is to change the relationship between musician and audience. “I feel like jazz concerts in a traditional setting often create distance”, saxophone player and band leader Adia Vanheerentals says. “I want to find ways to connect the musicians and the audience. Putting the musicians in between the audience, encourages active listening. For example: an instrument might be hidden from view, making people search for where a specific sound is coming from. It’s an invitation to discover and listen to every detail.”
“I also want to explore the idea of embodiment, of how you experience music differently when you use your body. That’s why we want the audience to stand and to have the ability to dance. As the musicians change positions, the audience moves too. Will they follow an instrument they like, follow friends or family, or stay where they are? It all impacts the experience. Movements by musicians can also influence the direction of the piece. This results in compositions that are not just formed by musical components, but also the physical relations between musicians.”
