About This Project

CHASING PENGUINS

Endlessly in search for new collaborations, this time Teun Verbruggen is working with Portuguese guitarist Andre Fernandes, who was a member of the Lee Konitz Nonet for a while and in the band of singer Maria João. Joined by saxophonist Steven Dellanoye, pianist Bram Delooze and bassist Nathan Wouters, The Verbruggen/Fernandes Quintet is certainly a dreamed of line-up.

“Chasing Penguins’ is permeated with a very personal signature and an effortless smoothness you could expect from this class act.” – Guy Peters (Enola)

Drummer Teun Verbruggen (°1975) is a very dedicated and active member of the Belgian jazz scene. His quest for a special touch and fresh sounds, as well as his desire to explore different styles and ways of playing the drums, inspired him to work as a sideman of Jef Neve Trio, Flat Earth Society, Alexi Tuomarila 4tet, The Bureau Of Atomic Tourism, Arve Henriksen, Stian Wersterhus, …

André Fernandes was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He is a very active guitar player who has played/recorded with musicians like Lee Konitz, Mário Laginha, Chris Cheek, Maria João, Cyro Baptista, Ohad Talmor, Tomasz Stanko, Bernardo Sassetti, Dan Weiss, Pete Rende, Bill McHenry, Jochen Rueckert, Perico Sambeat, Jeff Ballard, Julian Arguelles, David Binney, AviShai Cohen, Eli Degibri, Jorge Rossy, Carlos Barreto, Akiko Pavolka, Jarmo Savolainen, Phil Markowitz and João Paulo Esteves da Silva, amongst many others.

Chasing Penguins is not about explicit pointers; it’s about invention while you go along. Not without direction and purpose, but with an open and stimulating combination of harmony and restlessness.” – Guy Peters

Bram De Looze is a jack of many trades who travels and performs frequently with Piano e Forte, LABtrio, MiXMONK, Joey Baron and multiple ensembles alongside Dre Hocevar, Stephanos Chytiris, Stéphane Galland, Samuel Ber, Mark Schilders, and Antoine Pierre. Recently, he was granted a SABAM Jazz Award for ‘Young Talent’ at the Gent Jazz Festival.

Nathan Wouters studied his last year at the University of Göteborg (Sweden), where his teacher was Anders Jormin, and has finished his master’s degree with greatest distinction. He has worked with several professional musicians, such as Mark Turner, Dave Douglas, Hilmar Jensson, Aki Takase, Rudi Mahall, Kris Davis, Alexi Tuomarila, John Ruocco, Kurt Van Herck, Dré Pallemaerts, Bert Joris, Erwin Vann, Ben Sluijs, Jeroen Van Herzeele and Joachim Badenhorst.

Steven Delannoye was selected to attend the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York. At MSM, he worked intensively with pianist Phil Markowitz, who shared his experiences of playing together with the great Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman of the saxophone summit.

Like most of Teun Verbruggen’s projects, Chasing Penguins manages to find that delicate balance between accessibility and idiosyncrasy. It takes personality and elasticity to pull it off with conviction, and these guys have it in spades.” – Guy Peters
