With guests BERT JORIS – TRUMPET and NILS WOGRAM – TROMBONE
In his latest project, “Polyphony”, Jasper Blom taps into his fascination with 15th century polyphonic music. For Blom, this early Western music has a remarkable melodic quality that makes it simultaneously accessible and as adventurous as any good contemporary music. Inspired by French and Flemish masters like de Machaut, Dufay and Ockeghem, Blom invited Belgium’s foremost trumpet player Bert Joris to create a new experience by composing his own version of medieval polyphonic music for jazz quintet. After this, Blom turned his attention towards more contemporary influences like Bartok and Hindemith, fusing these with the old medieval Hoketus technique, referring to a melody shared between instruments. For his new material, Blom developed a more improvisational approach and he invited German star trombonist Nils Wogram to share the stage. The JBQ has been touring with Bert Joris and with Nils Wogram over the past years. As a result two live concerts at the BIMhuis were recorded and will be released later in 2018.
