BRAM DE LOOZE

PIANO E FORTE

About This Project

BRAM DE LOOZE

After visiting the Chris Maene museum in Ruiselede (BE), Bram was inspired to launch his first solo project with three historical pianofortes. Intrigued by the ancient pianos, and their temperaments and tones, De Looze approaches them via a contemporary musical idiom. Each piano has its own unique sound, which is of a great significance to this project. Always searching for challenges, De Looze effortlessly plays with time and space, and conjures up engaging atmospheres that lead to an idiosyncratic harmonic entity. When building his musical structures, which draw from jazz and contemporary styles, Bram infuses his playing style with the response, timbre, resonance, harmonics and dynamics of each instrument.

“Intelligent, virtuoso and perfectionistic” – Klara

Navigating between the warm, rounded sonorities of an original 1838 Erard, the precise and crystalline dynamics of a replica eighteenth-century Anton Walter, and the transparent sound of a copy of an 1843 Pleyel Concert Grand, Bram De Looze mixes fragments of nineteenth-century works or idiomatic expressive devices with off-the-cuff ideas, achieving a harmonious range of moods while allowing the specific character of each instrument to shine through. While improvisation is undeniably one of the most important aspects in this project, Bram De Looze also works from a repertoire specifically written for the pianofortes, which mixes his own musical vision with glimpses of pieces from the nineteenth century.

The premiere of this music was presented in an acoustic setting at the Henry Le Boeuf hall, BOZAR, Brussels.

“Living up to his reputation as a free spirit, Bram De Looze has produced a deeply personal work that is at once innovative and profound.” – Jazzhalo

Pianoforte

At the end of the eighteenth-century, the pianoforte was created, allowing musicians to use unprecedented dynamics on the keyboard and opening up a breadth of sonic possibilities that went far beyond that of its predecessors, the harpsichord and clavichord. For Piano é Forte, De Looze uses original pianos or replicas from the renowned piano constructors Anton Walter, Pleyel or Erard.

With this project he has performed in several venues, such as BOZAR (BE), Concertgebouw Brugge (BE), Schouwburg Kortrijk (BE), Handelsbeurs  (BE) and at the Leuven Jazz Festival (BE), Hasselt Piano Festival (BE) and Jazz à Liège Festival (BE).
